![]() ![]() But rather than choose to venture into that new territory, the fourth season effectively hits the “Restart” button and with “ The Lying Detective”, you essentially get Sherlock v.2.0.1. Thanks to the chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington, the Sherlock-John-Mary triptych actually works and introduced something new to the series back in season three. By that logic, adding Mary would naturally have disturbed this pairing, hence why they removed her from the equation, although this wrinkle might have been solved in the first place if they hadn’t given her a ridiculous backstory. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have maintained that Sherlock has always been the dynamism between Holmes and Watson. Initially, he turns her down but later takes pity and they go out wandering London and eating chips, only to find she’s gone. ![]() He’s murdered someone but she can’t remember the details. A lady, Faith Smith, asks Sherlock to take on a case involving her father, entrepreneur/philanthropist Culverton Smith. Either way, his drug addiction has gotten way out of hand, resulting in some trippy sequences courtesy of director Nick Hurran. Sherlock, on the other hand, seems to have either gone off the deep end or is living out his version of Trainspotting. Her absence is genuinely felt here, serving as yet another painful reminder of how badly the show botched her character arc. Like Remy did with Gusteau in Ratatouille but without any cooking involved. He sees his daughter only on the weekends, still hasn’t spoken to Sherlock and copes with the new situation by holding conversations with a hallucination of Mary (Amanda Abbington).
